Random thoughts... on call centers

why is it when an american or british tv show discusses outsourcing, indian companies and workers are prominently shown and the rest, which includes the philippines, are typically ignored? i mean, aren't filipinos better than those indians at the call center gig? my cousin who works at a call center attests to this. he has encountered some callers who actually make their relief known when they learn that the guy or gal on the other end of the line is a filipino whose english and accent is relatively closer to american english than indian english. indian english is derived from its british parent, so there are some nuances in words, usage, pronunciation, accent, etc. that are totally alien to an average american. let's take for example the word flat. for an american and filipino, it means something deflated or on a level surface. for the brit and the indian, it's an apartment. here's another, lorry. for the american and filipino it's a girl's name, whereas for the brit and indian, it's a truck! these are only some of the countless examples i can cite, but imagine yourself that you're an american customer who dialled a customer service hotline and the customer service agent on the other end is an indian. imagine the confusion and the subsequent anger you're going to have once those nuances in language become apparent. my point: americans should bring more business to the philippines rather than india. we're culturally, historically, and lingually more proximate. if you're an american reading this, would you talk with a guy who prefers cricket over basketball?
