a few months ago, i was asked to write a paper about the origins of rizal's thoughts, and during my research, i came across a line in an english translation of his novel Noli where he described maria clara as having "flabby" arms, or something to that effect. this came to me as a big surprise because prior to this discovery, whenever maria clara is mentioned, i would picture her being what i believed to be the perfect mestiza filipina, slim, sexy, tall, beautiful and definitely not having "flabby" arms. flabby arms connote a fat body of sorts, which is basically the opposite of what i imagine her to be. but then again, i'm applying a modern perspective in reading into rizal's thoughts and writings, which may obviously and significantly vary from his own and his time. i do think that rizal preferred chubby chicks, i mean just take a look at josephine bracken:
